Confessions of a Husker Fan

Here's a post a little out of step with most (wow, that rhymed):

As I get older, I find myself less interested in sports in general but feel more and more tied to the Nebraska Cornhuskers sports teams (especially football, of course). I was reflecting on this over the weekend as I felt disappointment after yet another bitter loss to the Texas Longhorns (we've beat them only twice in 15 years of conference play). I think the football team means a lot to me because the team symbolizes the amazing community and comraderie that exists among Nebraska's people. This is typical of agricultural communities, but it seems to me that this dynamic is especially true for the state of Nebraska and the university's football team. I can't help but wonder whether others in Husker Nation feel this same way; that we love the football team so much because, for us, they are more than just a football team. They represent our community, Nebraska, and being agriculturalists, we need each other to survive. Maybe others don't feel the same way, I don't know. Maybe I just feel like this because I don't live in Nebraska any more and watching the football team reminds me of home.

Gosh, I get philosophical about everything, even football. Lord, have mercy...
